EEGT Award Winner paints MBM models
Wiktor Kowalczuk recently won the award for Best Painted Army in Games Workshop’s Eastern Europe Grand Tournament 2008. Naturally I was delighted when he offered to apply his paintbrush to each MBM model in turn. Below are his thoughts and photo’s.
Mountain Giant:
Let's start with Mountain Giant. In my opinion the most representative mini in the range, so it was a challenge to paint it to the appropriate standard. The first difficulty I had to deal with was the assembly but a bit of epoxy glue and Milliput did the job. Painting came next and I have to say that it wasn't very easy mainly due to mini’s hefty weight! After looking at the original colour scheme you chose, I decided to alter it a bit mainly with the hair and coat. I opted for a gray-white scheme for the coat because there were a lot of Brown tones already present plus the contrast would draw more attention to the mini. So was the course of action with hair. When I first saw the mini I thought it would be cool to give him some red-hair. It seemed fitting because of the shape of his face and patchy facial hair. I decided to go with the club as the weapon of choice because I think it's more interesting than a normal rock. The flesh for the whole mini (as with most of my works) was painted using the layering technique (shading and highlighting).

Woodsman and Bear:
Well these minis were also a bit of challenge, not because of size or difficulty, but because clearly they are your favourites and the Bear shares it’s name with the website itself. Again I chose to alter their colour scheme a bit. With the Woodsman I had a dilemma about his clothes. The choice was between standard leather and tartan (it just seemed apt to me), but after taking another careful look at the mini I thought that your intention was to perhaps imitate a leather texture so I went with that. His hair colour is also something I decided to change, mainly because I like to experiment with colours, but also I thought that blonde hair would contrast nicely with the rest of the model.

With the Bear there was another question - Which type of Bear colouring to choose, Black? Brown? White? Either way can be painted in about 10 minutes. I decided for a Grizzly scheme. My reasoning being because this model is available packaged with the Woodsman and since that model already had a lot of brown going on I decided to balance it with a darker scheme here. Painting is predominantly a drybrushing of the textured fur with different mixes of Chaos Black and Fortress Gray (Fortress Gray and Skull White at the muzzle). Details of the mouth were finished with varying shades of red.

Tree Giant:
Well since I'm Wood Elf Army player I am sentimentally drawn to this mini. Again the technique was mainly a drybrushing of the bark, but I deliberately tried steering away from the traditional wood painting habits. By this I mean that a lot of painters just build up from Scorched Brown - Bestial Brown - Snakebite Leather - Bubonic Brown. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but I wanted something different.
I started with a mix of Scorched Brown, Chaos Black and Fortress Gray. After that I successively added Scorched brown. Then I added some more Gray into the mix and drybrushed lightly some of the most exposed areas. Next, highlights were added using respectively Bestial Brown, Snakebite Leather, Bleached Bone up to pure Skull White. Green elements were picked out using either mixes of Catachan Green with Bleached Bone or Dark Angels Green with Camo Green.

All in all these were a fun set of mini's to paint, and I am looking forward to having a go at future releases.
